Sri Lankan Banks & Finance Companies

Explore all licensed banks in Sri Lanka — commercial banks, specialized banks, and finance companies offering loans, savings, fixed deposits, leasing, and more. Compare them side by side.

Sri Lanka’s banking sector is made up of licensed commercial banks, which may operate current accounts and deal in foreign exchange; licensed specialised banks, which take savings and term deposits but cannot accept demand deposits; and licensed finance companies, registered under the Finance Business Act, which often pay higher deposit rates in exchange for higher risk. Every one of them is licensed and supervised by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, which publishes the authoritative register of licensed institutions.

Deposits with licensed institutions are covered by the Sri Lanka Deposit Insurance and Liquidity Support Scheme up to the limit set by the Central Bank, per depositor per institution. Confirm an institution is on the Central Bank’s current register before you deposit.

Frequently asked questions

How many banks are there in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka's banking sector is made up of licensed commercial banks and licensed specialised banks, alongside a larger number of licensed finance companies. All of them are licensed and supervised by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, which publishes the authoritative register. Anybanq lists the licensed banks and finance companies that offer retail products, with their services, branch networks and current rates.

What is the difference between a licensed commercial bank and a licensed specialised bank?

A licensed commercial bank may accept demand deposits and operate current accounts, deal in foreign exchange and offer the full range of retail and corporate banking services. A licensed specialised bank cannot accept demand deposits or run current accounts, and typically concentrates on savings, fixed deposits and lending such as housing or development finance. Both are licensed under the Banking Act and supervised by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

Are finance companies the same as banks in Sri Lanka?

No. Licensed finance companies are registered under the Finance Business Act rather than the Banking Act, and they cannot offer the full range of banking services. They often pay higher deposit rates than commercial banks, which reflects higher risk. Both banks and finance companies must be licensed by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, and you should confirm any institution appears on the Central Bank's current register before depositing.

Which is the largest bank in Sri Lanka?

By total assets the state banks — Bank of Ceylon and People's Bank — are the largest, followed by the major private commercial banks such as Commercial Bank of Ceylon, Hatton National Bank and Sampath Bank. Rankings shift with each reporting period, and branch network size does not track asset size, so compare on the measure that matters for your decision.

Is my money safe in a Sri Lankan bank?

Deposits held with licensed banks and licensed finance companies are covered by the Sri Lanka Deposit Insurance and Liquidity Support Scheme, up to the limit set by the Central Bank, per depositor per institution. Cover applies only to licensed institutions, so check the Central Bank's register first. Spreading deposits across institutions keeps more of your money within the insured limit.

How do I choose a bank in Sri Lanka?

Match the bank to what you actually need: deposit rates and tenure options if you are saving, interest rate and maximum amount if you are borrowing, and branch or ATM coverage near you if you bank in person. Fees and online banking quality vary widely between institutions. Anybanq lets you compare Sri Lankan banks side by side on services, branch network and current product rates.
