Frequently asked questions
Which bank or finance company has the highest FD rate in Sri Lanka right now?
For a 12-month fixed deposit the highest rate we track is 13.50% p.a. from Richard Pieris Finance; the highest from a licensed bank is 12.00% at Cargills Bank. Rates change often, so the table above is refreshed from each institution's published rate sheet.
How much interest will LKR 1 million earn in a fixed deposit for one year?
At today's best 12-month rate of 13.50%, LKR 1,000,000 earns LKR 135,000 before tax. After 10% Advance Income Tax is withheld you receive LKR 121,500, so the deposit matures at LKR 1,121,500. At the market average of 10.31% you would receive LKR 92,788 net.
Is tax deducted from fixed deposit interest in Sri Lanka?
Yes. Banks and finance companies withhold 10% Advance Income Tax (AIT) from interest paid to residents. Individuals whose total assessable income is below the tax-free threshold can submit a self-declaration to the institution to have interest paid without the deduction. The table lets you switch between net and gross figures.
Should I choose a short or a long FD tenure?
Longer tenures usually pay more: the average 3-month rate is 8.96% versus 11.22% for 24 months. A longer term locks your rate in if you expect rates to fall, but breaking a deposit early usually means a reduced rate, so only lock away money you won't need.
Are finance company fixed deposits safe?
Only deposit with institutions licensed by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. Licensed banks and licensed finance companies are both members of the Sri Lanka Deposit Insurance Scheme, which covers each depositor up to a set limit per institution. Finance companies often pay more because they carry more risk — check the institution's credit rating and see our safe investing guide before depositing large sums.
How does Anybanq collect these rates?
We compare 44 banks and licensed finance companies, reading each one's published fixed deposit rate sheet and recording the rate for every standard tenure from 1 to 60 months. Each product shows when it was last verified. Rates are indicative — always confirm the final rate with the institution before you deposit.
Rates are indicative, collected from each institution's published rate sheet, and can change without notice. Returns assume simple interest paid at maturity with 10% AIT withheld. Anybanq is a comparison service, not a bank, and this is not financial advice — confirm the final rate and terms with the institution.
